Anime + Manga Drawing: Chibi Characters 

Explore Japanese comics’ influential visual style and learn how to draw manga and anime-style sequential art with a special emphasis on Chibi characters. Through hands-on practice, students will refine their skills by replicating, understanding manga proportions, assimilating the visual language of manga, and grasping common features in manga drawing. By the end of the class, students will have a comprehensive understanding of character design and they will cultivate their own manga style to build a portfolio featuring their anime and manga creations.

Class Objectives:

  1. Manga Proportions: Develop a solid grasp of manga proportions through practical exercises, enabling students to accurately depict characters in the distinctive manga style.
  2. Visual Language: Acquire proficiency in the visual language of manga, including key techniques and stylistic elements, to effectively convey emotions, action, and narrative in sequential art.
  3. Chibi Character: Specialize in the art of drawing Chibi characters, exploring their unique proportions, expressions, and characteristics to create engaging and adorable figures typical of anime and manga. 
  4. Hands-on Replication: Hone drawing skills through hands-on practice, fostering the ability to replicate iconic manga and anime styles, thereby building a foundation for creative expression.
  5. Character Design: Develop a comprehensive understanding of character design principles, emphasizing the importance of visual storytelling and character uniqueness in manga and anime.
  6. Personal Manga Style: Encourage students to cultivate their own distinct manga style by the end of the class, fostering creativity and individual expression in their artistic endeavors.
  7. Sequential Art: Enable students to express narratives and emotions effectively through sequential art, emphasizing the storytelling aspect inherent in manga and anime creations.
