July 24-28 Hackers (Ages 9-12) Summer Camp 2017
APP Creations (9am-12pm)
From how we text people, check the weather, call a car service, or order a pizza, everything in this world is driven by apps. Apps have made our world faster, easier to travel, socialize, learn, and share. Designing these apps can be a lot of fun, and potentially a great skill building opportunity for your child's future career in software engineering. In this class students will learn to design and prototype applications, playtest ideas, and share their work with a growing community of young designers. MIT App Inventor is a Google supported, innovative beginner's introduction to programming and app creation that transforms the complex language of text-based coding into visual, drag-and-drop building blocks. The simple graphical interface grants even an inexperienced novice the ability to create a basic, fully functional app. By the end of this weeklong class students will have an application they can share and use on any Google device.
Introduce students to the world of building and programming basic robots using LEGO® MINDSTORMS® Education EV3 sets. Throughout this program, students will use mathematical concepts and engineering principles to brainstorm, plan, test, and modify sequences of instructions to accomplish a specific task. They will learn to build and program a catapult, a flight simulator, mazebot, bridge layer. For the final battle, teams will battle each other in a robot sumo match! Throughout the course, students will learn to utilize and program large motors, medium motor, color sensor, ultrasonic sensor, touch sensor and gyro sensor. Students do not get to take home any LEGO® projects. No computer or robotics experience require to join!
