July 16 – July 20 Hackers (Grades 3-6) SUMMER OF STEAM 2018

Geek Forest

At home, we are surrounded by devices that are becoming automated. What would happen if these ordinary devices became independent? Over this one week intensive course, the student will be repurposing old technology and will be designing robots with intentions independent of their human caretakers. This course for Tinkerers will focus on producing a series of small, hands-on projects centered around the “life” and personality of old objects around your home. Then we will be turning them into self-sufficient robots using simple machines and mechanical attachments. The students will learn to think outside the box and design creatively and with purpose, as well as other hands on skills when it comes to assembly. This class will incorporate a bit of physical computing, where the students will be combining their projects with hardware to automate their creations-- Girls Club style.

In this course, we will learn about electronic textiles and will be creating stuffed animals using soft circuits. We will engineer circuits, sensors, lights, and sound outputs into fun DIY stuffed animals that the Hackers can design and create themselves. The Hackers will use sewing and art combined with tech to create interactive toys using Arduino and other Adafruit products. This class teaches circuitry, electronics, wearables, Arduino, and a bit of C++ programming. Beginner friendly-- Girls Club Style.
