Coder Arcade/Retro Platform Game Design Fall 2021

In-Person Fall 2021

Unit One: Coder Arcade

In this unit students will learn about the fundamentals of arcade game design using different tools. First, they will work on a tactile platform to build, collaborate, and tell stories through video game creation. Students use colored blocks to design their characters and settings to tell their own amazing gaming stories. We will then explore a web-based beginner-friendly code editor to create retro arcade games for the web and for dedicated hardware. Like scratch, it can be used as a block-based coding and can easily see the javascript they are building. We will also explore Scratch and Python to code games as well. These tools will allow students to express their creativity in game design.

Unit Two: Retro Platform Game Design (Bloxels)

Design your own game. It all starts with an idea. The sky's the limit. Build games and tell stories about anything you can imagine. We will guide the students with storyboarding their ideas on paper. They will use the tactile feature of bloxels to create levels, characters, and any other art you have in mind. Using an app, they will capture and edit layouts and art, and animate your heroes and enemies. Games will be shared in the classroom and home.

*If we are advised to shutdown in-person due to COVID, there is no refund for the class. It will immediately shift to online. We will reopen as soon as local and state officials deem it safe. If online is not an option for you, we can only offer credit for future classes.
