Game Dev Lab: Retro Platformer: 8-Bit Bloxels (morning)
Using the Bloxels game design platform, students will implement character-building and storytelling to create their very own retro-style game! Brainstorming our character and villain ideas on paper, we will then move to the digital realm and start to create online. Students will be introduced to basic coding skills through the Bloxels color block system, implementing art and coding to develop their game’s world. We will have weekly check-ins as a class for students to exhibit their progress and gain ideas and insights from others. Everyone’s hard work will culminate in playing others’ games, and the games will be shared with the parents at the end of the semester.
Music Lab: Synth Sounds + Pocket Operator (afternoon)
What goes into producing a sound? We may know what a lot of things sound like but what goes into creating that sound is often unknown to us. While synthesizers are known for creating a wide array of sounds we hear in electronic music, they also break sound production down to its simplest form, allowing us to see what each waveform looks like, and how changing its shape affects what we hear. This lab breaks sound synthesis down into a modular format, making each part that goes into creating a sound observable and easy to understand.
